Residents of Hunters Hill came together ahead of ANZAC Day to honour and remember those who served, those who are presently serving and those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Tonight (Tuesday 23 April), marked the 101st year of our Combined ANZAC Memorial Service, jointly hosted by Hunter’s Hill Council and the Hunters Hill RSL Sub-Branch.

The evening included a short service of remembrance at the Hunters Hill RSL Memorial Wall, before a march along Alexandra Street to Council’s Town Hall for the full service.

Hunters Hill Mayor Zac Miles gave the welcoming address and said the service was dedicated to veterans of all wars, as everyone who fought or died for our freedom is remembered by someone.

“On this day above all days, we recall those, who in the great tragedy of war gave their lives for Australia and for the freedom of mankind,” Cr Miles said.

Lieutenant Commander Jennifer Neuhaus of the Royal Australian Navy gave the commemorative address and acknowledged the vital role of those who have served and continue to serve on the homefront.

The Sydney Thistle Highland Pipe Band, young performers from the Hunters Hill Public School choir and trumpeter Archie Cullen added musical elements.

The service was also supported by the sub-units of the 5th Combat Service Support Battalion, the NSW SES Hunters Hill Unit, Ryde Police Area Command and local churches.

Hunters Hill RSL Sub-Branch President Mr Steven Mitchell recited the Act of Rembrance and Hunter’s Hill Council Citizen of the Year Rob Fraser read the John McCrae poem, In Flanders Field. Dignataries including Federal Member for North Sydney Kylea Tink laid their wreaths at the Honour Wall.
