Bedlam Bay is a popular location that attracts many local residents with activities such as walking, boating, and weekend sports.
The Bedlam Bay Swim Site opened to the public in November 2025. Sydney Water has developed the RiverWatch predictive model so that users know when it is safe to swim at Bedlam Bay.
Sydney Water’s RiverWatch program has monitored water quality at Bedlam Bay since 2020. Water quality samples are collected weekly during the swim season (October to April) and monthly throughout the rest of the year.
Swimmers can check water quality before going for a swim at Bedlam Bay on Sydney Water’s Urban Plunge website and the Parramatta River Catchment Group’s interactive map.
As a general precaution, swimming in Sydney’s harbour and river sites should be avoided for up to three days after rainfall or for as long as stormwater pollution is present. The most obvious signs of stormwater pollution are water discolouration as well as debris in the water and on the tide line.
Water quality at Bedlam Bay has been assessed in accordance with the National Health and Medical Research Council’s (NHMRC) Guidelines for managing risks in recreational water (2008) and the NSW Water Quality Objectives.
