Students at Villa Maria Catholic Primary School travelled on a walking school bus ahead of National Walk Safely to School Day.
Students walked from the oval behind Holy Name of Mary Parish to the Villa Maria playground in a procession behind a yellow cardboard bus, holding signs and wearing colourful socks and shoelaces.
National Walk Safely To School Day encourages primary school children to walk and commute safely to school.
It is a community initiative seeking to promote road safety, health, public transport and the environment.
In 2022, the event falls on Friday 20 May.
Due to another school activity on that date, Villa Maria held its walk safely to school event on Thursday 19 May.
Participating students said walking to school with their friends was a highlight.
Teacher Lila Joseph worked with colleagues including Emily Raper and Jessica Robson on the event, with the support of Principal Hannah Schneider.
Lila said that as well as promoting road and pedestrian safety and health eating messages on the day, students participated in colouring and poster competitions in the lead up.
Villa Maria was among four schools to win a Walking Safely To School Day breakfast package from Northern Sydney Local Health District for students to enjoy once they arrived at school.
Hunter’s Hill Council’s promoted the event with local schools as part of its road safety program.
