Taking Action for Sustainability

Hunter’s Hill Council has furthered its commitment to reduce emissions and support the community to live more sustainably.

Councillors at a meeting tonight (10 August 2020) endorsed a working party to help develop a draft Sustainability Action Plan.

The working party will include councillors Elizabeth Krassoi, Justine McLaughlin and Jim Sanderson, as well as community representatives.

It will provide input, feedback and guidance on strategic planning, policy development, design and implementation proposals for the Council’s Sustainability Action Plan.

Council has over a period of time developed sustainability initiatives.

Resolutions in the past year relating to sustainability include:

• introducing a $300,000 Sustainability Reserve Fund;
• reducing water consumption;
• partnering with NSW Circular on a circular economy pilot project;
• looking at ways to reduce food waste in landfill;
• investigating alternative energy sources;
• assisting to establish a waste education and volunteer program with environmental group Ecopaddle.

The Sustainability Action Plan will respond to these resolutions and provide a framework for Council’s future actions.
