MEDIA RELEASE
Planning approval has been granted for a Sports and Community Facility at Boronia Park.
The Hunter’s Hill Council Local Planning Panel voted unanimously on Tuesday (26 October, 2021) to approve a development application for the construction and operation of a two-storey facility in the park, located between Ovals 1 and 2.
The ground floor will include change rooms, male and female toilets, accessible toilets, storage rooms and a kiosk.
On the upper level the development includes a food servery, storage facilities, a multipurpose community room, outdoor terrace, accessible toilets and tiered seating.
The facility will be a Council asset, managed by Council for the use and enjoyment of sporting clubs and the broader community.
Hunters Hill Rugby Union Football Club (HHRUFC) will be contributing through fundraising for the project. However, HHRUFC will not have exclusive use of the facility, and will have shared use alongside other groups, under a licence from the Council.
Development will commence once fundraising has been completed.
State and Federal grants are also financing the project.
The development application was assessed by an independent planner and determined by the independent panel.
The Council’s Acting General Manager Nick Tobin said the high level of community involvement in the project to date had helped achieve a great result.
Stakeholders from sports, schools, residential, heritage and environmental backgrounds provided feedback throughout several consultation stages.
“We look forward to providing greater community amenity in Boronia Park, so that people of all ages, genders and abilities have improved opportunities to participate, spectate and enjoy organised sport and other activities at this popular location.”
Mr Tobin said conditions of the development approval, such as a tree protection plan, heritage requirements for building materials, finishes and colours, security measures, and defined hours of use and operation, were designed to address concerns raised through public feedback.
