Hunters Hill Remediation Project - Nelson Parade

Notification of Preferred Project Report and Submissions Report Hunters Hill Remediation Project (08_0008)

The Proponent proposes to remediate land in the vicinity of the former Radium Hill Company site at Nelson Parade, Hunters Hill. As part of the original project application, the Proponent proposed to dispose of the contaminated material at a restricted waste facility at Kemps Creek. Due to significant community interest in the proposal, the Proponent investigated alternative waste disposal options.

The Proponent has now submitted a preferred project report (PPR) and submissions report describing the changes to the proposal and the Proponent’s response to issues raised in submissions received during the original 2012/13 public exhibition period. The amended proposal involves the following remediation and waste disposal strategies:

  • encapsulation of low-level radiological material on-site within two purpose-built containment cells
  • treatment and off-site disposal of materials containing petroleum hydrocarbons and heavy metals to a licensed waste treatment facility (not the Kemps Creek restricted waste facility).
